Case Study #25: A Small Foreign Language Department in a Public University
Project: Coaching of department chair and administrative manager
The incoming Chair of a small foreign languages department in a public university had never been a Chair before. This new Chair was assuming leadership in a situation where there were special complexities around sharing staff resources with other small departments, the need to collaborate with other Chairs in administrative supervision of departmental operations, and a number of issues in the academic development of the Department that required addressing.
Provide coaching assistance to Department Chair, the administrative manager, and the leadership group consisting of the whole group of Chairs and the administrative manager.
CMCT worked one-on-one with the Chair over a period of a year, providing coaching and strategic advice on an ongoing basis. CMCT also attended the regular meetings of the Chairs group and administrative manager, providing suggestions and advice on operational coordination and functioning around shared resources. Finally, CMCT provided the administrative manager with regular coaching on staff supervision, and attended staff meetings as advisor and coach to the whole group.
The staff situation stabilized and the administrative manager became more effective, the Chairs as a group developed processes for working together more smoothly, and the Department Chair was able to accomplish desired academic and administrative goals.
